General Director of Volkswagen Group Rus Marcus Osegowitsch, Governor of Kaluga Region Anatoly Artamonov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the German Federal Republic to the Russian Federation Rudiger von Fritsch, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to the Russian Federation Vladimir Remek took part in the event.

Marcus Osegowitsch said, «Celebrating the decade of local production is a very important milestone for Volkswagen Group Rus. We have seen the Russian market’s great potential for years, and developing business here is part of our long-term strategy. Our production sites, well-known for their innovations and high quality standards, set the benchmark for the entire industry. We strive to develop our own production, which allows us to offer the best cars at the best price — and makes us one of the market leaders. We are thankful for all the support we got from the Kaluga Region during these years, and for the impressive achievements we made together.»

«It is hard to overestimate Volkswagen Group Rus’ contribution to the development of the automotive cluster in Kaluga. Having placed its production here, the company brought its partners and suppliers to the region and created thousands of workplaces for Kaluga’s specialists. We are glad to congratulate Volkswagen Group Rus on their local production anniversary, and expect many years of mutually beneficial cooperation,» said Anatoly Artamonov.

The story of Volkswagen Group’s local production success in Russia started ten years ago with semi-knocked-down production. It took the plant a mere two years to become ready for launching full-cycle production, including stamping, welding, painting and assembly, in 2009.

The next stage of the development of the Russian production was launching a second production site at GAZ Group’s plant in Nizhny Novgorod in 2011. The project included assembly of Volkswagen and ŠKODA cars at the GAZ plant, so new assembly and body shops were built there, accompanied by modernization of the plant’s paint shop, improvement of its logistic and quality control systems, and start of production of components for Volkswagen and ŠKODA cars.

Further development of Volkswagen Group Rus’ production in Russia included the launch of a local assembly of 1.6 MPI EA211 engines in September 2015, and in November 2016 the company announced opening of a new body shop and upgrade of the paint and assembly shops for the production of the new-generation Volkswagen Tiguan.

The current range of models produced in Russia includes the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Volkswagen Polo and the ŠKODA Rapid in Kaluga, and the Volkswagen Jetta, the ŠKODA Octavia and Yeti in Nizhny Novgorod. More than 1,100,000 vehicles were produced in Kaluga, and more than 200,000 in Nizhny Novgorod since the plants were launched. The company has invested 1.75 billion euros into local production in Russia so far.
