Ten years ago, the successful story of Volkswagen Group local production in Russia started with semi knocked-down production. Just two years later, in 2009, the plant was ready for the start of full-cycle production, with the full-range of stamping, welding, painting and assembly. Volkswagen Group, as a leading global automotive manufacturer, gave impetus to the development of the local automotive cluster in Kaluga, attracting partners and suppliers to the region, and creating new jobs.

Local production of Volkswagen Group Rus was strengthened with the launch of a second production site at the GAZ automotive plant in Nizhny Novgorod. Cooperation between Volkswagen Group Rus and GAZ Group started in 2011 with the signing of an agreement for the contract assembly of Volkswagen and ŠKODA cars at the GAZ plant. According to the project, new assembly and body shops were built at GAZ, the paint shop was modernized, logistic and quality control systems were improved, and production of components for Volkswagen and ŠKODA vehicles was established.

The production site in Kaluga was constantly developing: in September 2015, the production of 1.6 MPI EA211 engines was launched in Kaluga with a maximum capacity of 150000 engines per year. In November 2016, a new body shop with total area of 12 000 sq.m was opened at the plant in Kaluga, and the paint and assembly shops were upgraded for the new Volkswagen Tiguan production.

Marcus Osegowitsch, General Director of Volkswagen Group Rus, said: «Today, we are glad to sum up the achievements of Volkswagen Group Rus in Russia. Local production is a key element of our long-term strategy in Russia. Our consistent investments into the development of production, product and people let us become one of the leaders of the Russian automotive industry. We stimulated the development of local components suppliers, expanded our presence on the Russian market, and started to export our cars. We intend to develop this success in the next decade, and we are grateful to our colleagues and partners for productive work.»

Dr. Oliver Gruenberg, Technical Director and Deputy General Director of Volkswagen Group Rus, said: «We managed to organize production sites in two regions that have provided Russian customers with popular Volkswagen and ŠKODA models for over 10 years. We are constantly developing our production sites to ensure the high quality of our products, which is confirmed by growing demand. Great products, efficient production and an excellent team are core components of our success, which will be drivers of our business in future, too.»
